RECOMMENDED OFFICIAL VOLUNTEER GEAR LIST:
This is a list of gear that official volunteers should consider bringing to their volunteer assignment. Please keep in mind that days in the mountains can be warm and nights can be cold. Please be prepared for all types of conditions.

Safety is always key when an individual is in the mountains. To be safe, one must properly take care of him or herself. Below is a list of clothing, food and comfort items that would be a tremendous benefit for you to take with you when you are volunteering. This list is NOT all inclusive, if you feel you need additional items please bring them.

  • Clothes (Please be prepared for all temperatures and dress in layers). Nighttime temperatures have been at or below freezing on some years. Snow is usually not present but it could happen. Daytime temperatures can range anywhere from hot to cold. Be prepared.
  • Jacket/Fleece
  • Rain Gear
  • Umbrella (good for sun and rain)
  • Watch -- you will be writing down times for incoming runners so you need an accurate way to tell time. Cell phones or vehicle clocks not recommended.
  • Tennis Shoes or Boots (No Sandals)
  • Sunscreen
  • Sunglasses
  • Hat - summer and winter
  • Sleeping bag/blankets
  • Headlamps/Flashlights
  • Reflective vests if you have them. The Relay will also supply these for Volunteers if you do not have them.
  • Chairs (lawn or Crazy Creek)
  • Small first aid kit
  • Food and Drinks (There will not be any food at the Exchange Points, please be prepared with snacks, meals, warm/cold drinks, etc. )
  • Cell phone. While many exchange points do not have service, many others do. Volunteers will have a list of Colorado Relay Staff and the Safety team as well as emergency numbers on their clipboard.

At exchange points the incoming runner hands off the wrist band to the outgoing runner (from the same team). Volunteers are required to get the outgoing runner to sign in as well as document the time of the exchange and get the incoming runner to sign that they have arrived. This is critical to the race as we account for all teams coming through each exchange in this fashion. We recommend having one volunteer doing the documentation onto the clipboard and having their volunteer partner assisting with the time, getting runners to sign in, and managing the crowd.

NOTE: Teams are encouraged to request assignments. All Volunteers MUST ALSO be added to the Team Registration Database. Assignments and duty times will be finalized two weeks prior to the race. Volunteers will be given specific instructions and information regarding their assignment. Please attend the volunteer meeting.
